The Knowledge Media Research Center (KMRC), situated in Tübingen, is an extra-faculty research institute. Its responsible body is the non-profit foundation under non-public law "Media in Education". The institute was founded in 2001 and is co-funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Baden-Württemberg. The KMRC is member of the Leibniz Association.

Fundamental research with relevance for practitioners

Sustainable research in the field of media-based learning and teaching approaches not only is in need of excellent basic research, but also of cooperation with practitioners. The KMRC tries to build such a bridge between basic research and applied science by working together with schools, universities, museums, and the industry. The institute realizes pilot studies whose suitability for practitioners is proven in cooperation with external partners. One example is the internet portal e-teaching.org, a platform to inform about and qualify for the implementation of digital media in higher education.

Scientific quality

Bound into a dynamic research environment, the institute is aligned with international standards in its scientific achievement. It also actively contributes to the advancement of benchmarks. As member of the Leibniz Association, the KMRC is subject to specific conditions of quality management. The Federal Republic as well as the German States audit the institution at least every seven years per independent peer review to see whether the institution accomplishes the funding requirements. In 2006, the senate of the Leibniz Association judged the KMRC's work to be of "very good" up to "excellent" quality.

International orientation and cooperation

Through this multidisciplinary research approach the KMRC has become a center of excellence in technology based knowledge processes. It is an important player within a national and international research network. The KMRC is initiator of the first WissenschaftsCampus in Germany and was initiator and coordinator of the "Net-Based Knowledge Communication in Groups" programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG) as well as coordinator of a research network for "Technology-Supported Education", co-funded by the American National Science Foundation (NSF) and the DFG. Besides, the KMRC initiated the Leibniz Graduate School for Knowledge Media Research, is part of the DFG research group "Orchestrating Computer-supported Processes of Learning and Instruction" and maintains bilateral cooperations with European and international associates.
