ScienceCampus Tuebingen, Cluster: StOb-Stigma – Stop Obesity Stigmatization

January 2010 - December 2012

ScienceCampus Tuebingen

In their everyday lives, overweight people are subject to stigmatization in many ways. Such stigmata are usually based on other people's false beliefs and erroneous attributions (e.g., attribution of negative personality characteristics). Conveying differentiated knowledge and reflected opinions about obesity using media might lead to a decrease in stigmatization tendencies. One problem is that apparently, there is a strong social consensus with regard to stigmatization (e.g., social acceptance of discrimination) which is openly expressed, especially in the new media. The project explores potential approaches to prevention, based on the formative learning approach, with youth and adults.
