VideT - Communicating the research process - a video-based transfer tool for students

Scientific findings are gaining increasingly importance. However, it is often difficult for many people to interpret and understand these findings. This is partly due to the fact that the scientific process of knowledge gain has received little attention so far. Therefore, the goal of the VideT project is to develop a video-based transfer tool in order to communicate the empirical scientific research process to the public and test it in schools.

Scientific findings provide an important contribution to knowledge development. However, it is often difficult for the public to interpret and understand these findings correctly. One reason for this is that the general public and schoolchildren have little knowledge of the scientific research process. The aim of the interdisciplinary project ”VideT - Communicating the research process - a video-based transfer tool for students” is to develop and test a video-based transfer tool for communicating empirical scientific research processes with students. The content of the transfer tool is based on the results of research on the ecology of bats and the impact of human activities on these animals. Besides testing the tool in schools, scientific research will analyse the parameters that determine and influence the success of the knowledge transfer. The project integrates expertise from the natural and social sciences as well as educational research. The IWM subproject develops and evaluates the video-based transfer tool with regard to the perception of the provisional nature (tentativeness of research results), the credibility of research results and the credibility of researchers in their science communication. In particular, the IWM will analyse the effects of the receptive video format. The focus of the research presentation (results vs. process) and the portrayal of the researchers (knowledgeable vs. knowledge-seeking) will be investigated. The data collection of the receptive format is carried out by the IWM and takes place in schools in Baden-Württemberg. The effects of the transfer instrument will be evaluated with regard to its transfer success.
