We are always interested in recruiting talented and motivated post-graduate researchers. There are two options for doctoral degree projects at the KMRC:
- a scholarship from the Leibniz Graduate School for Knowledge Media Research
- within the framework of an academic researcher position (half-time employment) at the KMRC or in a related project based on external funding
PhD student at KMRC
Besides the Leibniz-Graduate School, we offer interested PhD students the possibility to work as (half-time) employee at the KMRC or in a third-party funded project.
We offer intensive scientific cooperation and integration into the research activities of the KMRC. Payment is in accordance with the German collective agreement for public employees (½ E13 TV-L). Every PhD project at the KMRC and the department of Applied Cognitive Science and Media Psychology is linked to an in-house research unit that bundles thematically related projects. This structure guarantees our PhD students regular interaction with others, the exchange of information about the research area, and the planning of conference attendances and publications. Within these research units corporate projects are conducted, e.g. the organisation of international workshops at the KMRC.
Dissertation Topics
The topic of your dissertation will not be predetermined. According to the current
research topics at the KMRC and the Department for Applied Cognitive Psychology
and Media Psychology, PhD students develop their dissertation topic by themselves,
supported by their research units (see below). Currently, possible issues are
- Knowledge Acquisition with Interactive Presentation Media
In this field, instructional settings are explored, in which learners individually interact with computer-based learning environments that are characterized by non-linear information presentation, multiple external representations, and dynamic and interactive visualizations, e.g., hypertexts and interactive animations. Contact: Prof. Dr. Peter Gerjets and Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan. - Knowledge Acquisition with Communication and Collaboration Media
This area deals with the question of how the potential of digital communication and collaboration media can be utilized for collaborative learning and net-based knowledge exchange. Research addresses collaborative knowledge acquisition in traditional settings (e.g., at school or at university) as well as qualitatively different and novel scenarios, e.g., knowledge exchange in distributed (virtual) communities. This field primarily deals with the design and research relating to special application scenarios for new media in education (university, school, further education etc.). The procedural method applied by this research unit, is therefore mainly documented by a systemic approach, considering media, user, technology, and organisation as an overall system. The KMRC is closely linked to the University of Tuebingen, especially its Department of Applied Cognitive Science and Media Psychology. At the end of their post-graduate studies at the KMRC, researchers may obtain the degree of a Doctor of Natural Sciences (Doktor der Naturwissenschaften, Dr. rer. nat.) from the Faculty of Information and Cognition Sciences of the University of Tuebingen.
