The paper "Analyzing the Flow of Ideas and Profiles of Contributors in an Open Learning Community" by Iassen Halatchliyski (Knowledge Media Research Center), Tobias Hecking, Tilman Göhnert and H. Ulrich Hoppe (Collide Portal University Duisburg-Essen) has been nominated for the best paper award among 16 papers at the Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2013.
This paper provides an introduction to the scientometric method of main path analysis and its application to online learning communities like Wikiversity. The potential of the method is elaborated for analyzing the overall learning process of a community as well as the individual contributions of the participants in parallel.

The contribution of Dr. Karsten Krauskopf and Karin Forssell, Ph.D. "I have TPCK! What does that mean? Examining the External Validity of TPCK Self-Reports" at this year's conference of the "Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE)" was honored with the Thompson-TPACK-Award 2013. The paper, written by Dr. Karsten Krauskopf (Knowledge Media Research Center, Tübingen, Germany) and Karin Forssell, Ph.D. (Stanford University, Californien, USA), deals with the examination of TPCK-(Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) self-reports.

DFG-project „Mathe mit der Matte“ will be financed for another two years
The DFG-project "Mathe mit der Matte" will be financed for another two years. The project is part of the DFG research group "Analysis and Promotion of Effective Processes of Learning and Instruction". The project explores if children’s movement supports the acquisition of basic knowledge in mathematic. The project proposal was submitted by Prof. Ulrike Cress (KMRC), Prof. Hans-Christoph Nürk (department of psychology University of Tübingen), Prof. Korbinian Moeller (KMRC) und Dr. Anne-Christine Ehlis (University Hospital Tübingen). In the project a dance matt is used, and children have to compare figures and quantities.
In case of large numbers, they have to jump to the right, in case of small number they have to jump to the left. Within the first phase of the project it has been shown, that the movement improves building up a mental number line. This has a positive effect on several numerical tasks. In the seconds phase the project explores the underlying processes.
7th plenary meeting of the EU project NEXT-TELL from 26th to 28th September 2012 at the KMRC
This time the meeting was joined by members of the advisory board as well as by internationally selected principals and teachers to discuss about project ideas, developments and possibilities for knowledge communication.
Formative assessment, immersive learning environments, documenting and visualising learning data (see also OPCO12 „Learning Analytics“), teachers’ inquiriy, and strategic planning of ICT (information and communication technology) in education were discussed by the international partners of the project but also by the project’s advisory board members as well as principals and teachers.
NEXT-TELL based workshops as well as the current NEXT-TELL tool versions were offered to the principals and teachers from Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, England, and Germany. They were asked for their feedback for further development. Currently, the NEXT-TELL tools seem to increase efforts in the time limited school systems and therefore need further adaptation.
The goal to communicate and exchange experiences was very welcomed by the international school partners. They reported from their daily teaching and leading organization within their schools. The experiences ranged from sketches of the computer labs to reports of first steps in inquiring a teacher’s own testing ideas.
Knowledge on the Net - in Search of an Ethics in the Internet Age: International Conference on Ethics and Society at KMRC, Tuebingen, Germany
The Internet and varous Internet applications have changed our lives and our relationships. Changes concern the widened accessibility of knowledge and the understanding of what knowledge actually is. Coming along with the so called Internet revolution are ethical questions. How can we use knowledge responsibly in the Internet age? Who is responsible for selecting and structuring knowledge? What effects does the Internet have on our quality of life?
The conference Knowledge on the Net analyzes the impact of the Internet on the basis of some selected fields of human life and puts the ethical question at centre stage. Please find the programme here

Katharina Scheiter, KMRC, with keynote on "The mutual interplay between processing of text and pictures in learning with multimedia" at JURE 2012 in Regensburg, Germany
Common cognitive theories of learning with multimedia (e.g., Mayer, 2005) assume that relevant information from text and pictures is first selected and organized independently into separate mental representations, before these representations are integrated into a coherent mental model. Findings from the KMRC Multimedia lab in Tuebingen, Germany, headed by Prof. Katharina Scheiter, suggest that first pictorial information is often attended less
compared to text; moreover, the nature of the verbal information (i.e.,
the degree to which it contains spatial descriptions) influences picture
processing and thus learning from multimedia (text-driven processing of
Katharina Scheiter will present evidence indicating that even an initial glance at a picture may already positively influence text comprehension (picture-initiated processing of multimedia). Both sets of findings suggest that there is mutual interplay between text processing and picture processing that needs to be investigated in future studies in more detail. the keynote will also discuss the consequences these findings have with regard to theory building in multimedia learning.
This year's JURE conference for young researchers of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) takes places from July 23rd to July 27th in Regensburg, Germany.
Ulrike Cress, KMRC, new member of Educational Pschologist's Editorial Board
Prof. Ulrike Cress, Knowledge Media Research Center Tuebingen, became member of the Editorial Board of the Journal "Educational Psychologist".
Educational Psychologist publishes scholarly essays, reviews, critiques, and theoretical and conceptual articles that contribute to understanding issues, problems, and research concerning all aspects of educational psychology. From meta-analyses of studies probing the effectiveness of teaching methods to historical examinations of textbook standards, the journal provides insightful explorations of new educational concepts and accepted educational practices.

Manuela Glaser, KMRC, with guest seminar on "hybrid documentary formats" in Brussels
On December 5th, Dr. Manuela Glaser did a guest seminar within the course on "Hybrid Documentaries" offered at the Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design in Brussels. Dr. Glaser talked about "Hybrid documentary formats: How entertaining elements in archaeological television documentaries influence processing, experience, and knowledge acquisition".
Manuela Glaser explained various entertaining characteristics of hybrid documentary formats and their influence on recipients' cognitive processing, experience, and knowledge acquisition.
Devin Ray with talk on “Boundary Conditions and Process Mechanisms of Recognition Bias”
On December 1st, Dr. Devin G. Ray delivered an invited talk, “Boundary Conditions and Process Mechanisms of Recognition Bias”, to the Department of Psychology at the University of Lancaster in the UK.
Dr. Ray discussed his ongoing work on recognition bias, the reliable tendency for people to recognize others who share their ethnic or social groups better than others who do not share their ethnic and social groups. This work attempts to understand the natural circumstances in which recognition bias will disappear as well as the implications of different limiting conditions for process explanations of this phenomenon.
International workshop on "Knowledge and Skills related to Digital Tools for Teaching and Teacher Training" - October 25th, 2011 at KMRC Tuebingen
How can teachers make effective use of digital technologies in their teaching? How can they use digital tools to enhance student learning? What do they need to know to be able to do so? And, what can research tell us about how to answer these questions in order to help teachers acquire the necessary professional knowledge and to develop the necessary professional skills?
The international workshop aims at initiating a discussion on "Knowledge and Skills related to Digital Tools for Teaching and Teacher Training - Cognitive Processes involved in Teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)". The workshop will take place at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen, Germany, on October 25th.

Collaborative problem solving skills as a central focus for education and learning in the 21st century
At this year's ECER Conference in Berlin, Prof. Hesse, Knowledge Media Research Center Tuebingen, Germany, highlighted the importance of collaborative problem solving skills to meet the educational challenges of the 21st century.
Collaborative problem solving can be conceptualized as a mixture of social and cognitive problem solving skills. The social (collaborative) part refers to the way the groups coordinate their activities and is related to sub-skills, e-g., participation, perspective taking and social regulation.
ECER 2011 dealt with Urban Education. The conference took place from September 13th to 16th 2011 in Berlin.

Successful first International Summer School of the ScienceCampus Tuebingen dealt with „Making Sense of Social Media“
From August, 1st till August 4th, 2011, 31 international young researchers took part in the first international Summer School oft he ScienceCampus Tuebingen and the Leibniz Graduate School for Knowledge Media Research at the Swabian Alb. The summer School dealt with the topic „Making Sense of Social Media“.
The participants worked out and discussed new research questions and methods in three different workshops concerning knowledge building, knowledge exchange and social networks. Sonja Utz (VU University, Amsterdam), Dan Cosley (Cornell University, Ithaca) and Jan van Aalst (The University of Hong Kong) acted as workshop leaders. Robert Kraut (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh) and Judith Donath (Harvard University, Cambridge) lectured as keynote speaker on the first afternoon.

Ulrike Cress heads the Knowledge Construction Lab at the Knowledge Media Research Center Tuebingen, Germany. Besides Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) her research interests mainly concern social software, knowledge management, social dilemma as well as the development, implementation and evaluation of media-supported learning environments.
Summer School on web 2.0 and social media coming up soon

Prof. Kai Sassenberg becomes Associate Editor of the European Journal of Social Psychology
Prof. Kai Sassenberg, head of the "Social Processes" Lab at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen, Germany, will become part of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Social Psychology. From 2012 to 2014 Kai Sassenberg will take over the position as Associate Editor.
The European Journal of Social Psychology publishes articles of all kinds of topics in the field of social psychology. It is one of the leading international journals in its field.
KMRC at the 16th EASP General Meeting, July 12th to 16th, in Stockholm, Sweden
The official EASP conference 2011 started with a preconference on "The application of self-regulation approaches to social psychological phenomena" organized by Kai Sassenberg, KMRC Tuebingen, Kai Jonas, University of Amsterdam, and Daan Scheepers, University of Leiden.
It seeked to establish a more “social” view on self-regulation theories by focusing on the intersection of basic (intra-personal) cognitive and motivational principles and inter-personal, intra-group, and inter-group phenomena like negotiation, leadership, decision-making, health processes, stereotyping, discrimination, and media effects.

Pupils from Nuertingen at KMRC
50 pupils from a secondary school in Nuertingen visited the KMRC last week to gain insights into KMRC's research on the use of digital media in classrooms and exhibitions.
After a short introduction given by Prof. Schwan, the pupils participated in different experiments such as web search, eye-tracking studies and experiments to analyse the potentials of multi-touch technologies.

It presents a unique opportunity for young researchers to meet fellow researchers and learn from outstanding scientific leaders by developing new research ideas. Across three parallel workshop tracks (about 10 participants each), the Summer School "Making sense of social media" provides the framework to discuss recent developments from a scientific point of view, share ideas and gain insights into how we as a research community can make sense of social media.

Book on "Investigations of E-Learning Patterns: Context Factors, Problems and Solutions" published
Highly structured description formats (patterns) can help to externalize the implicit knowledge of an expert. The book Investigations of E-Learning Patterns: Context Factors, Problems and Solutions, edited by Christian Kohls, and Joachim Wedekind, Knowledge Media Research Center (KMRC), Germany, offers a strategic pattern-based framework of how educators can approach online learning or e-learning.
Can e-learning patterns be equally successful as their pendant in software development? This is on of the questions, the book poses. It gives insight into important research methods and results, and addresses both e-learning practitioners and researchers. The book is the result a workshop on e-learning patterns that took place at the Knowledge Media Research Center in 2009.
Currently, the pattern approach is further investigated by the KMRC within the context of the project "Patterns and Tools for Non-Governmental Organizations (Patongo)" dealing with knowledge management in large organizations.

Nina Heinze, KMRC, gives talk on "Future Social Learning Networks", February 1st, Learntec Karlsruhe, Germany
Due to ever-emerging technology learning and working environments are constantly changing. For instance, Web 2.0 and the Social Semantic Web are changing how we absorb, research and relay information. They also pose new potential to integrate real-life working conditions to higher education, thus fostering competencies students will need in the workplace.
To include emerging online tools and practice-oriented learning in university settings researchers from the KMRC (in cooperation with other European partners) designed an exploratory seminar setting that requires students to jointly solve ITdesign and implementation tasks by solely using social media services for collaboration, communication and production of artefacts.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Friedrich Hesse, director at KMRC, elected for vice-president of the German Leibniz Association
During its annual general assembly in Duesseldorf, the German Leibniz Association elected a new directorate. Prof. Dr. Dr. Friedrich W. Hesse, director at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen, was elected as new scientific vice-president of the Leibniz Association. He is now part of the four man steering committee of the Leibniz Association which is responsible for the management and strategic agenda of the research community.
The Leibniz Association is an umbrella organisation for 86 institutions in Germany conducting research or providing scientiftic infrastructure.
Dr. Kristin Knipfer receives award for outstanding doctoral thesis
The Leibniz Association awarded its annual prize for the best doctoral thesis in the field of humanities to Kristin Knipfer. Kristin Knipfer has been working as a scientist at the KMRC since 2008. The jury honored her for her dissertation on "Pro or con nanotechnology? Support for critical thinking and reflective judgement at science museums."
The Leibniz Association is the umbrella organization for 86 extra-faculty research institutes in Germany.
ScienceCampus "Informational Environments" with successful second project day at the KMRC
About 50 scientists from different disciplines came together to discuss and present running projects of the ScienceCampus "Informational Environments". In addition to project presentations and the introduction of the new corporate design there was also room for a meeting among the doctoral students of the ScienceCampus.
KMRC participates in NEXT-TELL kick off meeting in Graz, Austria
Researchers of twelve European partners participate in the kick off meeting of NEXT-TELL, a new integrated project within the 7th Framework Program dealing with "Next Generation Teaching, Education and Learning for Life".
The main objective of NEXT-TELL is to provide computational and methodological support to teachers and students so that they have nuanced information about learning when it is needed and in a format that is supportive of pedagogical decision making, thus optimizing the level of stimulation, challenge, and feedback for students. KMRC - with its expertise in high-quality quantitative and qualitative empirical research in the field of technology-enhanced learning - will contribute to develop and implement a research methodology that upholds methodological standards and meets the challenge to integrate results from different educational systems.
President of the Leibniz Association visits the Knowledge Media Research Center
At August 17th one of his first visits led Prof. Dr. Karl-Ulrich Mayer, the new and first professional President of the Leibniz Association since July 1st, 2010, to Tuebingen. There, where the Director Emeritus of Max Planck Institute of Human Development and Stanley B. Resor Professor of Sociology at the Yale University (USA) had studied one year, he visited the Knowledge Media Research Center, the University of Tuebingen and their common research network ScienceCampus Tuebingen Informational Environments.
The ScienceCampus Tuebingen as the first nationwide ScienceCampus has an exposed position and is groundbreaking for further cooperations between institutes of the Leibniz Association and universities. Now the Executive Board of the Leibniz Association appreciated this by an extraordinary funding for the time from 2011 to 2013 of 900000 Euro. Today Professor Mayer handed the accordant decision on to the direction of the ScienceCampus, Prof. Dr. Friedrich W. Hesse, director of the Knowledge Media Research Center, and Prof. Dr. Bernd Engler, rector of the University of Tuebingen. Besides strategic discussions, Professor Mayer, Professor Engler, and Professor Hesse walked through the Alte Frauenklinik of the University of Tuebingen. This building, actually in improvement, will be the domicile of the Knowledge Media Research Center and the Psychological Institute of the University of Tuebingen in autumn of 2011. This network of university and non-university researchers will be improved by another decision of the University of Tubingen: the Director's Villa aside will be the domiciel of the ScienceCampus Tuebingen in the future.

At this year's Cognitive Science Society Conference in Portland, USA, and at the Earli SIG 6/7 interest group meeting in Ulm, Germany, Prof. Dr. Peter Gerjets gives a lecture on "Bridge over troubled water: From Cognitive Science to designing digital instruction".
The lectures give an overview of concepts and methods in the field of Cognitive Science that have been applied to develop and optimize instructional design material within the last years. Prof. Gerjets draws conclusions from this research program and shows consequences for further research in the field.

Dr. Christina Matschke receives reward for best PhD thesis
For her PhD thesis on "The inclusion of a new group into the self-concept" Dr. Christina Matschke was honored by the University of Tuebingen with this year's reward for the best PhD thesis at the Department of Informational and Cognitive Science.
Ms Matschke has been working at the KMRC since 2007 and is actually coordinating the project Patongo.
Cognitive film study gives new insights into how to comprehend film
A joint German-Turkish research study with first-time film viewers shows under what conditions viewers understand or do not understand stylistic devices and scenic sequences in films.
As a basis for their current study (recently published in Psychological Science 21 (7), p.1-7) researchers from the Knowledge Media Research Center and the Istanbul University recruited 20 adult inexperienced film viewers from isolated mountain villages in southern Turkey and showed them 14 short film clips. The results give new insights in the perceptual and cognitive basis of film: for comprehending films the reference to conditions of natural perception is less important than assumed. More important seems to be the existence of a line of action or a line of events. Both can even help to compensate problems that arise with shots which provide discontinuities. Without such a line, first-time film viewers had great problems to interpret stylistic devices within the film correctly.
Key researchers Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan and Dr. Sermin Ildirar demonstrate that comprehending films roots in cultural preconditions as well as in higher cognitive processes such as being used to filmic design and presentation.
KMRC participates in MIRROR kick off meeting in Saarbruecken, Germany - new EU funded project on reflective learning at work
Lead partners from five different countries participate in the kick off meeting of MIRROR, a new project within the 7th Framework Program dealing with "Reflective Learning at Work".
The overall objective of MIRROR is to empower and engage employees to reflect on past work performances and personal learning experiences in order to learn in real-time, and to creatively solve pressing problems immediately.
KMRC will be heavily involved in the conceptualization of the reflection model and conduction of user studies to establish a scientific and methodological common ground among the project partners, as well as in determining the effectiveness of MIRROR-applications.

Renowned scientists and laymen alike are using blogs and social networks to get their messages to the public. Thereby, they are eleminating the middlemen and making scientific topics available to a broader audience. But are acacemic research and blogs compatible?
Does the new form of direct communication make scientific findings more transparent? What does science gain from direct contact with the general public and is this a positive experience?
Together with Bruno Rezende, winner of the Special Award Climate Change (Deutsche Welle), Nina Heinze, will discuss questions of "Climate Change and social Media".
Representatives of Chinese distance universities at KMRC
The chinese delegation, headed by the China Youth Center in Peking, visited the KMRC to inform themselves about trends and technical developments in the field of e-learning and e-teaching.
Specific interest was directed towards the project e-teaching.org at the KMRC. The project runs an online platform to qualify teachers and lecturers to use digital media in their classes.
The trip to Germany had been organized by the Chhinese-German Association for the International Exchange of Experience of High Qualified Staff from Industry and Science.
Group of American Teachers visited the KMRC
In the course of the "Fulbright Teacher Spring Seminars 2010" 20 American teachers visited the Knowledge Media Resarch Center to discuss the use of "Digital Media in the Classroom" in Germany and the United States as well as to get an overview of the research undertaken at KMRC.
Since 2008, the American Fulbright Commission and the Pedagogical Exchange Service have been organizing these kinds of seminars to give teachers insights into the university and teaching system of the respective partner country.
Contributions for EC-TEL 2010 conference workshop on "Motivational and Affective Aspects of Technology Enhanced Learning and Web 2.0" (MATEL '10) invited
The workshop brings together different perspectives on motivational and affective aspects of TEL and web 2.0 in order to foster the formation of a community between psychology, sociology, pedagogy, CSCW, and computer science.

KMRC hosting workshop on neuro science
On May 7th and 8th, the KMRC in Tuebingen will be hosting a workshop for junior scientists on brain and neuro science. Organizer is the Foundation of German Business (Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft).
The workshop will integrate guest lectures, teamwork sessions as well as a visit of the technology park Tuebingen. Lectures will be given by Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Otto Karnath from the Center for Neurology at the University of Tuebingen, Dr. Tobias Schlicht from the Werner Reichardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience Tuebingen, Thorsten Zander from Brain Products Berlin and many more.

Open House: "Virtual Realities" at the KMRC Tuebingen, Germany - March 7th 2010, 2pm-5pm
On that day, we invite the interested public to get to know KMRC's work on virtual realities. With the help of interactive technology installations, we offer both adults and children insights into 3D animations and digital technology used for learning purposes. Our highlight is the "Rebirth of a Dinosaur": experience it for yourself!
The 3D-dinosaur is brought to life using a mixed-reality technology that overlays a model skeleton with virtual muscles and skin. In addition, visitors will find several other experimental installations: experience a virtual soccer game, try out a driving simulation, and view 3D materials from the natural sciences. To complement the technology installations, there will be a talk given by Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan, dealing with the potential that virtual worlds have for learning.

Researchers from KMRC Tuebingen on visit at the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage in Cairo
Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan, deputy director of KMRC Tuebingen and leader of the research unit "Knowledge Acquisition with Cybermedia", Dr. Carmen Zahn and Manuela Glaser visited the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) in Cairo in late November.
On this occasion the scientists from Tuebingen met with Prof. Dr. Fathi Saleh (Director at CULTNAT), Sherif Farahat (Training
Manager) and Karim Omar (Head of the Computer Graphics Unit) to talk about possible cooperations among both institutions; with special interest in a digital database of the cultural heritage of Egypt or virtual animations of historical equipment and engines, see www.eternalegypt.org. In the focus of the visit was also the potential to explore an impressive multimedia and interactive presentation technique called CULTURAMA that makes even possible an 180 degree-view.
Successful Workshop on "The potential of social software for knowledge creation and economic performance"
The Knowledge Media Research Center and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) hosted an interdisciplinary workshop for talented junior researchers from the field of economic and psychological research.
In Mannheim, they presented their current work and discussed approaches for interdisciplinary research on social software (such as wikis, blogs, social tagging tools, and social networks), and other interactive web applications. The keynote speakers were Alessandro Acquisti (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) and Tom Postmes (University of Groningen, the Netherlands and University of Exeter, UK).
The workshop was also a kick-off for the KMRC- ZEW cooperation within the WissenschaftsCampus Tuebingen.
Friedrich W. Hesse from the Knowledge Media Research Center (KMRC), Germany, gives keynote presentation at EC-TEL 2009
The talk "Use and acquisition of externalized knowledge" by Prof. Hesse is one of three keynotes invited to EC-TEL 2009 in Nice. On October, 2nd, the speaker will address paradigmatic changes in learning research and highlight the potential of the so-called "Social Networks" and "Social Software Tools".
Hesse is going to show that such tools can serve as a bridge between formal and informal education. He states that the nature of the new information resources has changed the way we do (peer) teaching as well as the way how we learn from each other. To make use of the tool's potentials for educational purposes, we have to understand their underlying mechanism.
The speaker, Prof. Friedrich W. Hesse, is director of the KMRC, an extra-faculty research organization located in southern Germany, dealing with knowledge acquisition, its exchange, and communication within innovative technologies. He is also holding the chair of applied cognitive psychology and media psychology of the University of Tuebingen, Germany, and is initiator and speaker of the first WissenschaftsCampus (Science Campus) in Germany.
New project deals with efficient knowlege communication in non-governmental organizations
New project on "Patterns and Tools for Non-Governmental-Organizations" (in short: PATONGO) aims at the investigation of circumstances for efficient knowledge communication in larger non-governmental organizations. By the case of the Evangelische Kirche Deutschland, the exchange of good practices and the development of a common organizational knowledge structure with the use of web 2.0 technologies will be investigated and optimized within a large non-governmental organization.
The cooperation project with the FernUniversitaet Hagen and the Evangelische Kirche Deutschland (EKD) has a duration of three years. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Eduation and Research and the European Social Fund. Opening event of WissenschaftsCampus Tuebingen attracted 300 people
Human Development, Learning, and Education in Informational Environments is the topic the first WissenschaftsCampus in Germany deals with. The cooperation between the Knowledge Media Research Center Tuebingen and the University of Tuebingen is a strategic initiative to make use of existing expertise in the field of knowledge acquisition, knowledge exchange and knowledge communication with innovative technologies and of broad academics offering by the University of Tuebingen. The aim is to integrate it into common research foci and establish new structures to strengthen the empirical educational and media research in Tuebingen. At the opening ceremony, on April 20th, the partners officially signed and cooperation treaty.

Call for Papers: 2nd Workshop on Inclusive E-Learning -Deadline extension till April 14th
e-Inclusion is a necessary prerequisite to let people with different kinds of handicaps stay as equal members of our society. Quite a few people work towards solutions in the field of eLearning, collaborative learning, shared knowledge construction and the like - as we have been able to see in our previous workshop in 2008 as part of the ECTEL conference. This time, we would like to go further into the question how researchers and developers for special solutions for elderly people, people with learning disabilities and people with special (educational) needs can benefit from each others' experiences. We will address the comparable difficulties experienced by very young learners, learners with handicap or disabilities and elderly people when using ICT. Our assumption is that developing computer supported learning environments and utilities for every day life shares more common properties than the diverse target groups let expect. Considering not only technical but pedagogical and contextual aspects and intended outcomes and needs is a key for success solutions.

STELLAR kick-off meeting took place on February 25th-26th
The official launch of the brand-new Network of Excellence within the Seventh Framework Programme of the EU, STEALLAR, was hosted by the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi), in Milton Keynes, UK. STELLAR represents the effort of the leading research institutions and projects in Europe in the field of Technology-Enhanced Learning.
The network aims at unifying the diverse community. Amongst others, the work is based on a broad-scale delphi-study. The design and implementation process of the delphi-study is in the joint responsibility of the University of Freiburg and the KMRC. Moreover, KMRC participates in monitoring and evaluating the STELLAR activities.
International Workshop on E-Learning Patterns from March 4th-6th at KMRC Tübingen, Germany
200 years ago, Charles Darwin, one of the world's most important naturalists was born. His modern evolution theory has still been affecting science and every day life - and currently researchers at KMRC Tuebingen, too
Media psychologists at KMRC and scientists from the University of Tuebingen have started a project in the field of biology didactics in which they closely cooperate with pupils and teachers inside and outside the classroom. The project "Darwin 2.0 - Re-Discovering Evolution in Europe" aims at enabling pupils to retrace Darwin's steps, not only theoretically but with the help of real world and hands-on experience. The scientists, media psychologists, experts in didactics, biologists, zoologists and computer scientists, have designed a set of digital high quality learning and testing material that is used in the classroom as well as for field trips, e.g., for visits in the aquarium or for snorkel study trips.

Linda Rising gives guest lecture on patterns at KMRC
Rising is regarded as an outstanding expert in the field of patterns. Patterns describe recurring elements of successful applications. Patterns originated as an architectural concept by Christopher Alexander (1977) to label successful practices, the so- called pattern language. Rising's latest book "Fearless Change: Patterns for Introducing New Ideas" deals with patterns in the field of change management.
The lecture takes place January 29th, 5 pm at KMRC Tuebingen. The interested general public is invited to join. Free entry.
Chinese delegation visiting the KMRC
At KMRC, the members of the delegation - more than 20 high-ranking guests from the higher educational sector in China - informed themselves about movements and trends within the scope of e-learning and e-teaching. KMRC offered its international guests an interesting program: Besides the presentation of current research at KMRC in the above mentioned field, some specific areas were highlighted: aspects of functionality and didactic design, of quality assurance and media technology were explained on the basis of e-learning and e-teaching projects, for example on basis of the KMRC led project e-teaching.org.
The visit was organized by the Chinese-German Association for the international exchange of experience of high qualified staff from industry and science.
Virtual lecture on "excellent teaching" at universities, december 15th, 2pm
Recently, national initiatives to foster excellent research and teaching at German universities have become popular. Moussouri's research examines the museum/audience relationship using communication studies and cultural theory integrated with learning theory. The Lecturer in Museum Studies at UCL Institute of Archaeology, London, presents a conceptual framework that articulates the multifaceted conditions for making meaning in the museum.

Ulrike Cress now professor for Educational Research at KMRC!
In August 2008, PD Dr. Ulrike Cress will take over the professorship for Educational Research at KMRC. Ulrike Cress studied psychology at the Unversity of Tuebingen (diploma 1993), achieved her Ph.D. in the year 2000 and got her venia legendi for psychology with her work on the information-exchange dilemma in 2006. From 1993 to 1998 she worked as research fellow at the German Institute of Research for Distance Education (DIFF) in Tuebingen. From 1998 to 2000 she worked at the Institute of Psychology, University of Tuebingen, where she was also assistant professor at the Department for Applied Cognitive and Media Psychology (2000-2006). Since 2006 she has been leading the research unit "Design and implementation of integrative learning envirnomnts" at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen.
Ulrike Cress was appointed to a W3-professorship for Educational Research at the Fernuniversität in Hagen and to a W3-professorship fo the Psychology of New Media and Research Methods at the TU Berlin. Whereas she rejected the former, Ulrike Cress accepted the assignment to the W3-professorship for Educational Research at the KMRC Tuebingen.
Her main research interests are web-based informal learning, computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL), social software, knowledge management, social dilemma and evaluation of media assisted learning and working environment.
New book on construction and communication of knowledge with wikis

It primarily addresses practitioners, but by forbearing from describing technical details, the book is also suitable for those who do not have specific technical background.
KMRC broadcast on "selective perception" in German television
The German television channel ZDF has produced a short broadcast on "selective perception" at KMRC. Prof. Dr. Stephan Schwan, head of the KMRC research unit Knowledge Aquisition with Cybermedia, explains the phenomenon of selective perception from the perspective of cognitive psychology. The interview is enriched by examples from lab studies and practical experience.

Official launch of the E-Teaching portal for universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg at KMRC
On july 22nd, the new E-Teaching portal for universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg will officially be launched at KMRC. Representatives from the universities involved in e-learning are invited to get to know the new functionalities of the portal. They are also asked to participate in the ongoing design process. The portal is financed by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Wuerttemberg (MWK) and will replace the web presence of Virtuelle Hochschule Baden-Wuerttemberg.

e-teaching.org amongst finalists of MEDIDA-PRIX 2008 competition!
e-teaching.org, the information portal for the use of digital media in academic teaching is one of the finalists of the competition for this year's MEDIDA PRIX 2008! 19 out of 77 submitted projects made it to the finals. The award in media didactis aims at stimulating the innovative and sustainable implementation of digital media in academic teaching. It is endowed with prize money of 100.000 euros. Since 2000, the prize has annually been offered by the Gesellschaft für Medien in der Wissenschaft (GMW). Allowed to participate are projects from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The award ceremony will take place in Vienna, on Septemer 18th.

The workshop will bring together researchers from Europe, America and Asia to discuss mainly two important and closely connected strands of social software, namely participation and personalization. Highly interwined within both personalization and participation are technological as well as cognitive and motivational aspects. The workshop participants are especially aiming at researching into new synergies between these approaches and establishing new networks.

Joint project in collaboration with the University of Groningen "Self-regulation and leadership"
A collaborative project on "Self-regulation and leadership" has been established together with the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). The project headed by Prof. Dr. Kai Sassenberg is funded by the NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) in the "vernieuwingsimpuls" framework until 2012.

The information portal e-teaching.org, located at KMRC, provides you with an attractive program for the current summer semester.
The virtual event series, started on May 20th with a training for the use of the Weblog-Publishing-System Wordpress, conducted by Sven Wiebusch (editorial staff at e-teaching.org). Training regarding the Content Management System Drupal will be offered by Tobias Hölterhof from the University Duisburg-Essen. Famous guest in our chat with experts will be Prof. Dr. Rolf Schulmeister from the University of Hamburg. He will answer your questions concerning the „Net Generation". In May, the virtual lecture will focus on "Capacity Effects of E-Learning at German Universities", e.g. Dr. Bernd Kleimann from Hochschul-Informations-System GmbH (HIS) Hannover will be participating. In June, Prof. Dr. Michael Kerres from the University Duisburg-Essen will deal with "University Development and E-Learning". An introduction into Social Tagging will be given by Stefanie Panke (editorial staff at e-teaching.org). In July, our last guest within this series will be Santina Battaglia, chairwoman of "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hochschuldidaktik" (DGHD), talking about the "Initiative for Excellence".

Awards from Society for Personality and Social Psychology go to Jennifer Fehr
On its 9th meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) has awarded Ms Jennifer Fehr (psychologist at KMRC) with the Graduate Student Poster Award and a Travel Award. The Graduate Student Poster Award is an annually given to junior scientists at the SPSP conference. In various discussions the competitors have to show their professional knowledge. Honored are poster presentations that reflect both the individual excellent research of the junior scientists and its precise representation on the poster.
