Description

The portal www.e-teaching.org offers comprehensive information on didactical, technological, and organizational aspects of e-learning at universities. It specifically targets university lecturers in German speaking areas who want to integrate digital media into their teaching. Since its launch in 2003, it has become a well-established information resource comprising approximately 1.050 web pages, an extensive glossary, and diverse multimedia supplements. To establish a broad and sustainable use of new media, appropriate concepts of teacher training and structures of consulting and support have to be established.

surface of the portalThe aim of the project e-teaching.org is to foster the use of new media in higher education by providing regularly updated content on didactical, technological, and organizational aspects of e-learning as well as user-oriented community features. The content is suitable for users with different levels of knowledge and skills in the field of ICT. The portal is conceptualized for self-navigated learning of individual teachers as well as for hybrid qualification concepts which combine the portal with advisory services.

Partner concept

To launch the portal as a qualification tool in universities it has to be accepted by e-teaching counselors as an everyday working tool. For that reason e-teaching.org cooperates with numerous universities in the German-speaking area through a partner concept. Partner institutions have the possibility to present their e-learning activities within the portal.
A community area was launched in 2006 to support communication and cooperation within the German speaking e-learning community. Here, numerous functions and networking features are made available to the members to facilitate and contact to other members, e.g. members can announce their expertise and interests on a virtual business card. In addition, community events are hosted regularly. These include live events like lectures and discussions with e-learning experts, webcasts and online training sessions.

Project history and structure

partners of e-teachingThe construction of the portal devolved roughly through two phases: a pilot phase and a consolidation phase. At first, during a two-year pilot phase (2003-04) supported by the Bertelsmann and Nixdorf Foundation, a prototype of the portal was developed and tested at two universities. The main emphasis in the consolidation phase (2005-06) lay on the development of a sustainable maintenance model that can support the creation of a broader e-teaching community. In this period, the Federal Ministry for Education and Research provided the support for the development and distribution of the portal.
From 2007 to 2010, the portal was financed by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. During this time one main focus was to establish new Web 2.0 functionalities. Additionally, pilot developments in the field of content syndication were carried out jointly with e-learning NRW.
From January 2011 to December 2013 e-teaching.org was jointly fostered or supported by the following institutions: the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Science and the Arts of the state of Hesse, the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia plus the Virtual University of Bavaria and the Centre for e-Learning Technology of the state of Saarland. During this project phase, the portal has been further enhanced with regards to content and technology. Developments for content exchange via content syndication were expanded and more opportunities for increased user participation were created.
Since January 2014 e-teaching.org is financed by the budget resources of KMRC . In the current project phase, the portal will not only be constantly updated with regards to content and technology, but will also be used as a research tool and as a means to transfer research results of the KMRC to the public. e-teaching.org closely cooperates with the research and development project "e-teaching.org in the context of social networks", which is funded by the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia since the beginning of 2014. Within this project, the e-teaching.org community is to be expanded and diversified through the use of external social networks.
